This page will act as a photographic journal. What I'm using, why I like various bits of kit, how I set up certain shots. Stuff that on the whole would act as a massive turn-off for anyone not interested in wildlife photography.

Black-bellied Dipper

February 02, 2013  •  1 Comment

I've never photographed a Dipper of any sort before, anywhere. What brilliant little birds they are. They're superb, and I've not got a lot else to say about them. This particular bird was on a smallish stream near Thetford in Norfolk, and has been the subject of my thinking for quite a while- I finally made the trip today and I'm very glad I did. Tricky conditions, very dark for the most part, but a supremely confiding subject made it as easy as it was going to get under the trees. Shutter speed was hard to come by - most photos taken below 1/400s, and that's with ISO of 1000. No complaints though! Tripod-mounted 800mm lens and both the 1D4 and 5D3 bodies (the latter at ISO 3200!), a 500mm f4 would have been handy - I find my thoughts leaning ever more towards this lens - the one I used to have. The beauty of the 800mm is the extra reach with no compromise in quality, however at f5.6 it is slow, and the extra focal length makes it that much easier to wobble. For the majority of situations you want as much focal length as you can get, but if you're prepared to pick and choose the super-close birds, 500mm is perfectly adequate and double the light and shutter speed would be hugely useful. Today the best I could hope for was a series of nice poses, rather than the action shots that would have been more interesting. Still, they're quite nice portraits! Best session of the year so far, wins all the prizes for Bird of the Year as far as I'm concerned. If you can get there, I recommend you go!

Slavonian Grebe

A few of the confiding Slavonian Grebe that has recently been at Dartford. I didn't get anywhere near as much time with this bird as I would have liked, so I hope it sticks around until Saturday as I have some unfinished business! A bright day with diffuse white cloud would be ideal, as I hate photographing black and white birds in full sun!

Lovely Tits

I expect this post to get a lot of tits. Er, I mean hits. Just a wild left-field guess on my part. Anyhow, here are some images of a Blue Tit I took the other day whilst unsuccessfully staking out some apples that had been put out for Fieldfares. Blue Tits are wildly unde-rappreciated birds, as when I was doing the post-processing I was surprised to find I hardly had any images of them at all in my files. This is something I must rectify, as they are fantastic - can you imagine finding one abroad? Or rather, seeing one for the first time? We would all oooh and aaah about a Parula or something, but when you get down to basics, these are easily as good. Hopefully I'll be able to put some time in and bring you a lot more in the coming months.

Crow Feast

I am not normally a fan of people throwing out food for birds to eat. All too often it results in waste, rats, and if near water as is often the case, algal bloom. At one of the ponds near where I live, this is a constant problem - there is feeding birds, and then there is feeding birds. At this particular pond we have moved on from families bringing a few bits of bread to feed the ducks, and instead we have people driving to the site and dumping immense piles of what is essentially trash. Mouldy pittas and naans, loaves upon loaves of bread, lentils, unidentifiable gloop, you name it - it probably gets thrown out at Alexandra Lake. The result is that the pond is turning into a stinking mess, and in summer the water is basically dead - only by virtue of the massive amounts of rain this summer did it survive. The asian community are the principal offenders - whether this is some kind of misguided cultural act of goodwill or charity, semi-religious if you will, or whether it's just because they own a lot of shops/restaurants that would have waste food on a semi-industrial scale I don't know, but it's really big problem that is getting worse and the site owners are doing nothing about it. One of the rangers, even more misguided than the general public, actually took down the "Please don't feed the birds" sign before she moved on as she thought it not community-friendly! Not that people took the blindest bit of notice. Anyhow, the point of this minor rant is that sometimes the absurd feeding can result in interesting photographic situations, and this Sunday I saw something I hadn't yet seen before - two ladies arrived and threw out a big pile of raw bits of meat. I'm not entirely sure what it was, but the colour was unnaturally red, so I'm going for Chicken Tikka cubes of the sort you might find on a kebab skewer. I'd been photographing ducks when I became aware of a riot of birds behind me, and so raced over. Spiced or not, the local Crows were big fans, and the whole lot was demolished in under five minutes.

Bearded Tits yet again

Went back to Hyde Park in full sun - guess what?! Yep, it went in five minutes after I got there. Nevermind, I got a few more that are passable. Quite windy, so a bit challenging, but the real difficulty was the general public, all of whom seemed intent on preventing me doing anything! I've had a really busy photographic weekend, loads to post up - I think I need to start becoming much more selective - very strange, not sure this has ever happened before!
