This page will act as a photographic journal. What I'm using, why I like various bits of kit, how I set up certain shots. Stuff that on the whole would act as a massive turn-off for anyone not interested in wildlife photography.

Fearless Fieldfare

February 24, 2013  •  Leave a Comment

Fieldfares are usually very wary, to the point where I've singularly failed to get any photos of one in many years of trying. I managed a few when the snow came down earlier this year, but wasn't completely satisfied. So it was brilliant to get another bite at the cherry this afternoon in Essex. Originally Mick, Richard, Kev and I had been after the long-staying Long-tailed Duck at Shoeburyness, and although it had been there yesterday, it was a no-show today. A Fieldfare made ample compensation though. Light was OK, topped out at 1/320th I think, and in post-processing I have added some warmth that was completely lacking in the field. We spent about an hour with this bird, and after an initial period of flightiness, it seemed to become accustomed to our presence and spent a lot of time feeding in the middle of us as we clicked away. Good practice for Morocco, which is just around the corner! There are a few more images in the "Thrushes" gallery.

Bonaparte's Gull in Sussex

This bird has been on my mind for quite some time, but until today I had no time to go and see it. Happily it stuck around, and although I had to stand around for over three hours in the cold doing very little, sure enough it came in. It's a dainty little Gull, constantly out-competed by even the Black-headed Gulls, but it has now been faithful to Crumble's Pond, a small boating lake in Prince's Park in Eastbourne. When I arrived at around 10am this morning the light was actually quite nice. No sign of the bird however, and as I waited patiently with a few other birders the light gradually deteriorated. By the time the bird arrived sometime after lunch, it was the same dull conditions that have made photography mostly a misery for most of this year - so many good opportunities, and almost all of them have been in the murk! Nevermind though, I've never had the opportunity to photograph this species before, so dull light or not I was going to have to have a go! No flight shots sadly, mostly the bird just bobbed about on the water. Everyone else probably got some though, as it did take off every time bread was thrown. However as it was me doing the throwing, the action was over before I could even raise my camera! Sod's law!

Juvenile Kittiwake

Just returned from a trip to Shetland to twitch the Pine Grosbeak at Collafirth. Naturally that wasn't the only thing I did - spent a happy couple of hours attempting Gulls in flight. Here are a few of a young Kittiwake that made a couple of close passes at Lerwick Catch - the birds hang around the processing plant where the trawlers come in, hoping for scraps that come from the outfall. Nice soft evening light at around 4pm. I reckon I could get into photographing Gulls in flight if I did it more!

Black-headed Gull at f2

February 07, 2013  •  Leave a Comment

Regular readers will know I have an optics fetish - it's almost an illness actually. At least I use my gear, perhaps not to the fullest of its ability, but I do use it. Anyhow, a while back I purchased a used 200mm f2 lens. The price was amazingly good, and I knew that if I tired of it I could sell it on at no loss, and probably even turn a profit. My primary use for it was going to be portraits of the children, and candids at Canary Wharf, but I haven't really got round to that yet. I have however had my eye on a particular Black-headed Gull that is often sitting on the railings between the tube and my office, and seems very comfortable with people walking by only a few feet away. Naturally I never have my camera on me, and so for the last few weeks have been bringing it with me every day in the hope the bird will be there. And naturally, it hasn't. Until this Monday, when it was there again. Guess where my camera was? Yup, at home. Tuesday I made sure to bring it in, was the gull there?

Today I finally got lucky. Just as I came round the corner this morning, it flew in and landed. I had enough time to extract the camera and dial in the settings (AV on -2/3rds), and take a few snaps of it. Specifically I wanted to use the lens wide open at f2, after all why lug this lump around if you're not going to take advantage of the one thing that makes it special? As it happens f2 is rather good in low light. Unfortunately the bird didn't linger, perhaps a good thing as I needed to go to work. I managed about 30 shots, and probably could have got a fair bit closer to the bird had I tried. Bottom line is I'm undecided about the lens. It's not a wildlife lens, but I knew that - though with the 1.4x converter it would be very close to the 300 f2.8 lens, and probably wouldn't drop a lot versus it, and could also become a 400 f4 lens. In other words very versatile, with the advantage of being able to shoot at f2, which no other lens of this focal length can do. It's a lovely bit of kit for sure, and the extra stop of light is fabulous, but in my hands at least, I can't say I can get images that are any better than from my 70-200 zoom, which is a lot easier to handle, over a kilogram lighter, and far cheaper. I think I need to use it more for it's intended purpose of portraits before I make up my mind, perhaps mounted on a tripod to fully appreciate what is said to be incredible sharpness and bokeh. I suspect that it may be one of those lenses that has a steep learning curve associated with it, the challenge will be to master the razor thin depth of field. My trouble is that I have no time to practice, and any free time I do have I'm likely to reach for something much longer and go and shoot birds. I'm going to a couple of weddings this summer, and we've got a couple of family holidays booked up too, so perhaps take it along on those and see what it can do. Mind you, at the weddings I might be viewed as one of the "all the gear no idea" brigade by the pros who will be there doing the official photos!

Slavonian Grebe: Attempt 2

February 03, 2013  •  1 Comment

Had another crack at the showy Slav in Dartford this morning. No nasty sun to make the images look harsh - however a dull grey sky meant I had no shutter speed either! You just can't win seemingly, so I had to pump the ISO up yet again. The Grebe didn't feed very much this morning, but did spent a good amount of time in the calmer water close to the western end of the small lake - mostly sheltered from the wind - not perfect reflections by any means but pretty nice nonetheless. The images made when the bird was sitting in this darker water were easily my favourite, but to be honest it's such a pleasure to see a Slav like this that I didn't really care where on the lake it was! Anyhow, a great session with this bird, much more satisfactory than the last time, the only downside being moved off (except I didn't move) by a jobsworth security guard who was very concerned for my safety in case I should follow the Grebe into the lake!
